Planning connects scope, sequence, resources, money and risk. A useful plan explains how the work can actually be delivered and how the team will recognize a deviation.

A situation you may recognize

A programme shows installation starting on Monday, but approved drawings and the long-lead equipment are unavailable. The dates look orderly while the dependencies make the plan impossible.

Three practical steps

  1. Break the agreed scope into manageable deliverables and work packages. Use a work breakdown structure to connect responsibility, acceptance evidence, budget and schedule activities.
  2. Develop a logical sequence with design releases, procurement, access, resources, inspections and commissioning. Review dependencies with the people doing the work before establishing an approved reference plan, or baseline, for comparing performance and forecasts.
  3. Agree progress measurement, reporting dates, change control and escalation thresholds. Record assumptions and risks so the plan can be updated through an explicit decision process.

Who works together

Planners coordinate logic and dates; discipline leads validate execution; cost specialists align budgets; procurement and operations confirm interfaces. Baseline approval follows the project governance arrangements.

Illustrative example

Illustrative case: a warehouse plan links roof completion to weatherproof storage for electrical equipment. Procurement revises delivery timing, and the site team avoids accepting goods into an unsuitable area.

A mistake to avoid

A Gantt chart is a view of the schedule. Attractive bars cannot replace logic, resource assumptions or an agreed scope.
