Project Execution Plan

Set out how a project will be delivered, controlled and handed over using an editable execution plan with practical responsibility, milestone, interface and readiness tables.

How to use this template

This editable Word template helps your team agree how the project will be delivered. Add the scope, responsibilities, milestones and delivery arrangements, then review the plan with your project team.

The form prepares a separate brief; it does not fill the Word or Excel file.

How to use this template

When you need it

Develop the project execution plan after scope and delivery responsibilities are sufficiently defined to coordinate the work. Use it during mobilization and update it when strategy, package boundaries, baselines or major interfaces materially change.

What it helps you decide

It brings the project's delivery arrangements into a coherent operating plan. Managers can see how design, procurement, construction and handover connect, and identify missing responsibilities or prerequisites before teams mobilize around inconsistent assumptions.

How to complete it

  1. Establish scope and objectives from approved requirements, then define governance, package strategy and decision authority using the applicable contract documents and actual organizational responsibilities.
  2. Coordinate design interfaces, procurement and construction arrangements with baseline milestones, cost controls and supporting plans, recording each workstream's outputs, accountable role and release basis.
  3. Review information controls, handover strategy and mobilization readiness, resolve significant gaps and submit the integrated plan through the established project review and authorization route.

Who prepares and reviews it

The project manager coordinates discipline, procurement, construction, controls, quality, HSE and operations leads. Contract and governance representatives validate responsibilities; the designated project authority reviews and authorizes the actual execution arrangements.

A mistake to avoid

Do not let the execution plan repeat disconnected departmental plans without resolving their interfaces; its value lies in coordinated responsibilities and workable delivery decisions.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a manufacturing expansion involves live operations beside construction. The execution plan coordinates package boundaries, operating interfaces and commissioning prerequisites. Review reveals an unassigned shutdown decision, enabling management to establish ownership before committing the construction sequence and related procurement milestones.
