Engineering Model Verification and Validation Plan

Define checks of model implementation and fitness for an intended engineering use with explicit limitations.

How to use this template

This Word template contains prepared headings, tables, project fields and completion notes. Add your information, review the completed document and remove the notes before issue.

The form prepares a separate brief; it does not fill the Word or Excel file.

How to use this template

When you need it

Use before relying on an engineering model for a consequential decision and after material changes to its implementation or intended use. Establish the review boundary before calibration or comparison results influence acceptance.

What it helps you decide

The record separates checking correct implementation from testing suitability for a real application. It makes independent references, uncertainty and restricted uses explicit, allowing reviewers to assess what the model can credibly support.

How to complete it

  1. Define Model version / use and assign Check IDs. Specify decisions, operating range and exclusions before selecting verification tests or validation evidence.
  2. Record Check type, Independent reference and Method / settings. Distinguish implementation verification from validation, and explain any reuse of calibration data in subsequent evaluation.
  3. Link Acceptance basis and Actual result reference, including sensitivity checks. Record Restriction / reviewer and changes requiring reruns while retaining files and settings for reproducibility.

Who prepares and reviews it

The model owner prepares the plan with discipline and software specialists. Independent competent reviewers check implementation and validation evidence; the designated engineering authority decides release conditions for the stated use.

A mistake to avoid

Using the same observations to calibrate and independently validate a model without explanation overstates the strength of evidence for its performance outside those observations.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: an engineer develops a drainage model for a site with observed rainfall and flow records. The plan checks units and implementation, then identifies independent observations for comparison. Reviewers assess the validated range and unresolved uncertainty before allowing the model to support a particular design decision.
