How to use this template

When you need it

Prepare a method statement before executing a bounded construction activity, once its design, materials and workfront conditions are sufficiently defined. Revise it when the sequence, access, temporary works or interfaces materially change.

What it helps you decide

The document makes the proposed work sequence reviewable and usable by the delivery team. It reveals missing prerequisites and connects execution steps to quality records, responsibilities and applicable site controls.

How to complete it

  1. Define activity boundaries and source precedence using current drawings, specifications and the applicable ITP; establish the resources and workfront prerequisites for the proposed method.
  2. Describe each work step with its responsible role, resources, quality record and source; identify confirmed hold or witness points and relevant permit interfaces.
  3. Review contingencies, protection and handover arrangements with affected teams, then route the method for review and brief the approved sequence through the site's established process.

Who prepares and reviews it

The construction engineer or supervisor drafts the procedure with quality, HSE and temporary works contributors as relevant. Discipline specialists check technical aspects; acceptance and work authorization remain with the project's designated roles.

A mistake to avoid

Avoid copying a similar project's sequence without checking actual access, soil information and interfaces; familiar activity names do not establish suitable execution conditions.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a contractor plans to install underground drainage beside an operating road. The method statement records excavation stages, access interfaces, installation checks and reinstatement sequence. Review identifies an unresolved temporary traffic interface, prompting coordination before the relevant workfront is released.
