Engineering Technology Comparison

Compare technical solution families on performance, integration and lifecycle evidence before procurement.

How to use this template

This Excel template contains prepared working sheets and completion notes on a separate sheet. Enter your project data and review the completed workbook before use.

This editable workbook helps you organise project information. Check any included formulas, assumptions and results before use; it does not replace professional review.

The form prepares a separate brief; it does not fill the Word or Excel file.

Read product descriptions in your language. The Word and Excel template files are in English.

How to use this template

When you need it

Use during concept or engineering selection when several technology families could meet the same function. Apply before procurement focuses attention on particular vendors or locks the design into one technical approach.

What it helps you decide

The comparison exposes operating limits, integration needs and long-term support consequences. It allows technical selection to consider more than initial purchase cost while preserving gaps that still require project-specific validation.

How to complete it

  1. Define the common Requirement and duty boundary for each Technology option. Separate mandatory functions from desirable improvements before comparing performance or cost.
  2. Record Evidence-supported capability and Source / independence. State Operating limitations and avoid assigning compliance where the relevant operating condition remains untested.
  3. Assess Integration consequence, Lifecycle cost basis and Validation gap, including skills and vendor dependencies. Recommend further validation before the authorized technology selection decision.

Who prepares and reviews it

The discipline or systems engineer prepares it with operations, maintenance, cost and data specialists. Independent technical reviewers test the comparison; the owner decides the technology route separately from supplier award and design approval.

A mistake to avoid

Comparing technologies at different operating duties can make one appear more efficient while hiding the support and integration work needed to meet the actual requirement.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a facility compares different wastewater-treatment approaches for a variable industrial stream. The record aligns influent conditions and required output, then identifies consumables, operator skills and support dependencies. The owner selects the next investigation based on evidenced fit rather than one supplier's headline price.
