How to use this template

When you need it

Prepare this checklist before undertaking or independently checking an engineering calculation, and revisit it when survey data, operating requirements or design assumptions change during development of the calculation package.

What it helps you decide

The checklist exposes uncertainty before it becomes a precise but misleading result. It helps the engineer decide which inputs are sufficiently supported and which require confirmation or sensitivity testing.

How to complete it

  1. Define the calculation identity and purpose, then list the design basis, criteria and source revisions used to establish the input boundary.
  2. Enter each parameter, value, unit and source locator in the input table; distinguish confirmed information from values still awaiting verification by a named reviewer.
  3. Document assumptions, coordinate conventions and software version, then use Independent verification and gaps to identify checks needed before the competent approval route proceeds.

Who prepares and reviews it

The calculating engineer prepares the input list with survey, process and other discipline contributors. An independent checker reviews units, sources and applicability; competent approval follows the project's engineering responsibility and delegation arrangements.

A mistake to avoid

Avoid hiding assumptions inside a calculation file; an unexplained value may be reused as a verified requirement by another engineer later.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a retaining wall calculation uses groundwater observations collected in a dry month. The checklist identifies the measurement source and marks the adopted design water level for confirmation. The checker requests an engineering assessment of seasonal conditions before the wall design is finalized.
