How to use this template

When you need it

Use this worksheet when a schedule activity needs a defensible duration estimate and the planner must make quantity, productivity, resource, calendar, uncertainty, and selected-duration assumptions visible for review before scheduling.

What it helps you decide

It explains how a duration was selected and what could change it, helping teams challenge unrealistic productivity assumptions and avoid treating one optimistic planning number as an established delivery commitment.

How to complete it

  1. Identify Activity ID and Work / quantity / unit, then record Estimation method and Productivity / resource basis using relevant production evidence or justified assumptions.
  2. Specify Calendar / time unit and assess Optimistic duration, Most likely duration, and Pessimistic duration on consistent work boundaries and resource assumptions for comparison.
  3. Explain Selected duration using Source / assumption and Estimator / review, preserving uncertainty instead of implying that the worksheet automatically determines a reliable programme duration.

Who prepares and reviews it

A planner or estimator typically prepares the worksheet with supervisors, engineering, procurement, and relevant trade specialists. Package owners review productivity and resource assumptions, while the planning authority decides how the selected duration enters the programme.

A mistake to avoid

Dividing quantity by headline productivity while ignoring access, calendar, resource availability, and interfaces can produce a duration that is numerically tidy but operationally unrealistic.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a contractor estimates trench installation for a constrained utility corridor. The worksheet records quantity, crew basis, access limitations, and a working calendar, then compares plausible duration outcomes. The reviewer selects a planning duration that reflects the access evidence and flags the condition requiring reassessment.
